Featured Artist Charles F. WicklerArtist’s statementOur culture is increasingly based on visual imagery. A key component of this visual world is text. Text informs, stimulates, indoctrinates, sells and/or manipulates. My art uses text alone or with a variety of images in multiple media. Sometimes the text is the work of art. In other works the text expands or complements a found image that creates a conceptual interplay. In creating my artwork I look for inspiration from casual encounters with words, in social commentary and in found images. Chance or random reflections about words or altered words often result in major artworks. In reading current news commentary I find issues or ideas that end up as the basis for a work of art. I also collect found images that I manipulate through the addition of words. My artworks are mixed media because each work demands media that will allow for the most effective format to bring the concept to the best conclusion. Usually I find that the simplest, most direct media are the most successful. These works are not meant to be decorative. They are meant to confront the viewer to stop and react to an image in a new context. |
